The Secret World Of Arrietty.
Based on: The Borrowers.
Genre: Fantasy.
This animated movie was released in 2010 in Japan but I just saw it like a week ago. It was recommended to me by a friend and one day I got bored, so I decided to watch it.
This is a collaboration of Disney and Studio Ghibli, need I say more.
The animation is typical Studio Ghibli style. They don't change the way they draw their characters and I totally like it that way (My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away,Kiki's Delivery Service, etc)
I know there's probably a lot of reviews out there but this is my review, my perspective of what I think about the movie.
So apparently there's this kid called Sho/Shawn who came to live with his grandmother because he's really ill and needs to be taken care of. His parents got separated and his mother couldn't look after him because she's out of country on a business meeting. As he walks in his grandma's house he spots a tiny girl in a plant (just like Thumbelina) he's just about to take a look in the plant, but his grandma calls him. She quickly rushes off to her house.
Her name is Arrietty ( hence the name of the movie). She obviously lives in a small doll-like house fit for her size and her home is just adorable. You have to watch the movie to see how beautiful it is but I'm just gonna show Arrietty's room.
People like Arrietty are know as "Borrowers". They borrow stuff from human beings without being noticed. She goes with her father for her first borrowing and came across a beautiful and intricately designed dollhouse in Sho/Shawn's room. He yet again spots her hiding behind a tissue paper but assures her not to be afraid of him. They quickly return to their home and Arrietty's father decides that they'll have to move to a new place as humans should not know that little people exist. Sho/Shawn's grandma told him that she believes that little people exist and her husband got the doll house made specially made for them to live in. Haru ( a maid) is intrigued after hearing this and wants to see a borrower for herself.
I'm gonna skip the details and state that Arrietty and Sho/Sawn finally become friends. Haru then finds Arrietty's house and takes her mother captive.
Sho/Shawn helps Arrietty in rescuing her mother. Arrietty and her family then leaves Sho/Shawn's house in search of a new place. As Arrietty is about to leave, Sho/Shawn calls her and she rushes to say goodbye to him. He tells Arrietty that how the borrowers will to survive has given him hope to live through the operation and they go their separate ways.
The reason why I haven't told you guys the details is because it's no fun, I don't want to spoil the whole movie if you decide to watch it.
In Disney's dubbed version they show that Sho/Shawn has returned to his grandma's home a year later, indicating that his operation was successful and to his surprise he hears rumors of things going missing in his neighbor's house.
Do watch the movie, it's short, cute, the animation is lovely and it's an adorable movie overall.

A beautiful fanart of Sho/Shawn and Arrietty.
